Nelson Mandela

I have just started reading the book "A Prisoner In The Garden: Opening Nelson Mandela's Prison Archive", which tells the personal story of his time in prison. Some of the photographs were taken during a 1977 press visit to Robben Island, where Mandela was incarcerated.

The book authors state 'The images from the 1977 visit reveal that, on the eve of his 60th birthday and in the middle of his jail term, the prison experience was shaping Mandela into a man with a manifestly strong spirit who embodied authority'.

I will post a more detailed review when I am finished what promises to be a good read.

Hi Brian

I had the enormous pleasure of going to South Africa for almost a month three years ago and Mr Mandela is considered almost as God.

There is much to be done and the investment in education is clearly the way forward as far as Mr Mandela is concerned. I support that stance.

There is awesome poverty and tremendous wealth on opposite sides of the road in Cape Town for instance and I look forward to the day when South Africa has real equality.

I hope it happens in my lifetime and much of the credit will go to Mr Mandela.

Brian,

Great to see your new blog, and such a good idea for a theme, too. Mr. Mandela was a good choice to lead off with. Keep after it!

I recently read a really nice biography of Nelson Mandela. He is certainly a man of great integrity and character. The biography concentrated on his time in prison and how he won the admiration of the guards and everyone he came in contact with. Looking forward to more.
